IDEKO strengthens its research expertise with a new PhD

Markel Sanz, a researcher at IDEKO, has successfully defended his doctoral thesis — focused on new vibration-reduction techniques for thin-walled part milling — and has been awarded the highest distinction by a prestigious international panel.

The defence took place at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) with Dr. Mikel Arizmendi (Tecnun – University of Navarra), Dr. Niccolò Grossi (University of Florence), Dr. Amir Rashid (KTH Royal Institute of Technology – Stockholm) and local professors Aitzol Lamikiz and Amaia Calleja.

As a member of the Basque Research and Technology Alliance (BRTA), IDEKO reinforces its commitment to scientific talent by welcoming this new PhD to its research team.

Markel joined the Dynamics and Control research group at IDEKO by initially completing his Master’s thesis and then launching a doctoral project addressing one of the major challenges in precision machining: milling thin-walled components, which are highly sensitive to vibrations.

His research focused on three key areas:

  • Advanced process modelling, including multi-axis milling simulations and error prediction.
  • Optimization of parameters and tooling, using analytical formulas and new cutter geometries such as sinusoidal tools.
  • Dynamic enhancement, of the workpiece through tunable fixtures and 3D-printed advanced materials -like Inconel-.

According to Markel, "This thesis allowed me to specialize in an underexplored area at IDEKO: we had previously focused mainly on machine or control induced vibrations. With this research, IDEKO expands its capabilities in thin-walled part machining."

The insights gained enable the Research Center to tackle real-world challenges associated with complex geometries and low-stiffness structures, an increasing demand in strategic industrial sectors.

IDEKO congratulates Markel on this achievement and thanks him for advancing knowledge in such a critical area of advanced manufacturing. His work not only extends IDEKO’s technological capabilities but also strengthens its position as a reference centre for developing solutions to the most complex machining challenges.

IDEKO strengthens its capabilities with 36 PhDs currently on board —28% of its workforce— a figure that has steadily grown over the past decade. This reinforces the Center’s reputation as a key environment for pursuing a research career in advanced manufacturing.
