By means of machining a previously compacted sand block with a robot
In response to the traditional processes in use for cast iron
models, IDEKO Technology Centre, together with other partners, has developed
the technology chain that enables the use of manufacturing 4.0 in the metal
casting industry of non-serialised parts without the use of intermediate
models. To achieve this, the casting mould is no longer based on a model but
instead made by machining a compacted sand block. The previously compacted sand
is machined using a CNC-controlled robot with special tools for sand. This
results in a considerable time gain in obtaining the castings, apart from the
process being more economical, with lower consumption of materials, less
polluting and capable of producing parts of superior quality. More advantages
of this project are the possibility to include a mould check prior to casting
to reduce the risk of faulty casting.
