Big Data for improving in-plant productivity

Digitalisation is an opportunity both for machinery manufacturers and for the users of machinery.

Although there is no standardised approach to start and transform a manufacturing organisation into a digital company, in this article Jon Kepa Gerrikagoitia and Gorka Unamuno of the IK4-IDEKO ICT and Automation research line reveal effective approaches and perspectives that manufacturing companies can adopt, after carrying out an analysis of the opportunities offered by digitalisation, Big Data, ETL, Business Intelligence and Machine Learning.

DIGITALISATION OPPORTUNITY

Digitalisation is an opportunity for both machinery manufacturers and the users of the machinery. These opportunities can be aimed at different improvement aspects within the production process and of the product, such as: Maintaining the value of the asset, maximising the value of the asset and revaluation of the asset.

Maintaining the value of the asset: this section includes corrective, preventive and predictive maintenance on the one hand and, on the other, the management of spares and consumables.

Maximising the value of the asset: optimisation of the production processes, management of energy and updates and management of obsolescence are integrated into this improvement group.

Revaluation of the asset: management of the remaining value of the asset, retrofitting of the asset and the adaptation of the asset to the production of new parts is a challenge for achieving better asset amortisation.
