Zero-defect manufacturing in Factory 4.0 through data-based products and services

QU4LITY is the largest European project devoted to autonomous quality and zero-defect manufacturing in industry 4.0. The project has 14 pilots through which it seeks to demonstrate how European industry can construct an ecosystem of open and orchestrated digital platforms. These will allow highly customised zero-defect strategies to be developed that consider all the stages of the life of the product and process, resulting in competitive advantages for the industry.


The adoption of 4.0 concepts in zero-defect factory models is being limited due to the fragmentation of the solutions during the life-cycle of the data, the lack of modularity and connectivity of the existing solutions and the difficulty of applying the quality control cycles to them. The challenge is to improve decisions regarding quality and processes to ensure speed, transparency and reliability of the information. It is about applying quality control loops that involve multiple organisational level and technical stages in plant production. For this, interoperable data networks are required that can connect diverse production equipment, manufacturing plants and different digital platforms.


The result of the project will be the creation of a products and services model for zero defects, which seeks to be transformative and adaptable to the needs of small and medium-size enterprises. For this, it is bringing together technological suppliers and end users, which will give form to the model through an open platform ecosystem and using multiple digital enablers and components for zero defects. It considers a large number of technologies: digital connectivity and edge computing, autonomous “plug and control” devices, real time data spaces, monitored and adaptive processes, simulation spaces for the process digital twin, etc. The competitive advantages that they provide include the improvement of operational efficiency, the reduction of defects, energy efficiency and the new digital business models.
